Sustainability

7845 is committed to environmental, social and economic sustainability, all interdependent linked systems. As such, good systems design will enable improved environmental sustainability across business and government.

The conversion of paper records to digital format provides organisations with a readily accessible, practical and cost effective way to eliminate or reduce the use and consumption of large quantities of paper in every aspect of their operations. The move to digital format as the primary medium for information processing and storage in all types of organisations can provide major environmental benefits by reducing the consumption of paper, and reducing:

  • the amount of embedded energy and resource committed to the built environment providing storage of paper records
  • the energy and other environmental costs required to maintain that built space
  • the energy and other environmental costs required to transport paper records.

Energy efficiency

Premises

7845 is a purpose built integrated facility providing server farm, production capability and archive storage. It has a largely passively managed stable thermal profile and low energy use through the use of specific insulation materials and thermal massing.

IT infrastructure

7845 infrastructure is based on Sun Microsystems SunFire x64 systems. These are servers developed for new, greener data centres and run cooler and require less power than comparable platforms. This leads to significant energy savings overall. All elements of the infrastructure design utilise power saving features that will reduce power to a negligible level during downtime.

Green Power

7845 maintains its primary data and production centre in Tasmania. Tasmania is a jurisdiction where 98 per cent of the energy generation is renewable.  7845 choose to purchase AuroraGreen power from Aurora Energy.  AuroraGreen is renewable energy generated from the wind and accredited by GreenPower, a government accreditation scheme designed to encourage and reward electricity generation from new renewable energy sources.

Promotion of paper recycling

Storage boxes

7845 document storage boxes are produced using recycled materials by Amcor Fibre packaging, except for archival grade long term storage.

Document destruction for future paper recycling

Where possible within each client’s operational and legislative requirements, 7845 encourages clients to send to secure document destruction those paper records that have been converted to digital format and are no longer required to be held as physical records. This material is sorted by the destruction provider for future use in the production of recycled paper product.
